Life is full of surprises, and we just got a delicious one. We had the chance to bring a custom-made cake to one of our all-time favorite bands: The Kills! Here’s the full story behind this sweet (and surreal) moment.

It all started when we saw the lineup for Cognac Blues Passion Festival. The Kills? In Southern France? We had one of those classic, slightly unhinged ideas: “What if we brought a cake to them?”. A few discussions with the team later, we received the green light. Go time.

Baking a Cake for The Kills: The Brainstorming

Now, bringing cake to bands is kind of our thing. On our YouTube show, Rock’n’Roll Teatime, we often thank the artists we interview with epic, one-of-a-kind desserts. And we finally got to bake one for one of our most beloved bands, The Kills.

So yeah, we were thrilled. And completely panicking.

Our first idea was a cherry-lemon trifle (a nod to the song Sour Cherry) served in a giant martini glass (a wink to the Ash & Ice album cover). But logistically, it was a mess. The heat, the travel, the glass… no go.

We had only 24 hours to come up with a new plan! Then came the spark: the God Games album cover.

The Perfect Cake Creation

We came up with a cherry-lemon entremets with a leopard print pattern in the album’s color palette, topped with Swiss meringue buttercream, delicate, rich, and as cool as the band itself.

To give it that signature The Kills edgy look:

  • Two of the cakes were topped with mini sunglasses, cigarettes, and a “103” medallion (a nod to one of the standout tracks on God Games).
  • The other two were styled like classic sundaes but with a twist: each had a little bull medallion, to honor the last record.

The result was elegant, edgy, and wild. Exactly how we’d describe The Kills.

The delivery

We delivered the cakes backstage, and the smiles on their faces during the gig made all the chaos worth it. Huge thanks to the Cognac Blues Passion team for making it happen and to The Kills, who even gave us a lovely shoutout on Instagram:

We’re still on cloud 9!
