Sit down, guys—we need to talk. We’ve found the perfect antidote to the current state of gray, uninspired monotony. In a world where everything seems beige and lifeless, one artist is bringing back the sparkle and swagger we’ve all been craving for: meet Gyasi!

Gyasi on stage in Bordeaux 2024

Gyasi made a stop in Bordeaux last year for the Relâche Festival and guess what? We missed him and we now hate ourselves for that. But the universe works in mysterious ways. This year, a friend with impeccable taste tipped us off, and the moment we pressed play, we were hooked.

Gyasi is like the lovechild of Bowie and Marc Bolan. He’s an artist full of charisma, with a great voice and impeccable guitar skills. We’re convinced this guy has the power to reignite the glam rock flame with the force of a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Thankfully, Gyasi returned to Bordeaux a few days ago to play at the iBoat—and this time, we ran to catch him.

Meeting Gyasi

Maybe you already know about Gyasi (pronounced JAH-SEE)? Coming from Nashville, he’s got a reputation for jaw-dropping live performances and over-the-top outfits.

This self-made artist is a fabulous guitar player, and his influences are undeniable—but he’s definitely trying to create a world of his own. With a fantastic debut album (Pronounced Jah-See), two EPs, and a new live album released this year, the guy’s been pretty busy.

Gyasi and Sound Eaters

Given all that, we had to have him on Rock’n’Roll Teatime, our brand new YouTube series where we treat artists to pastries inspired by their music and sit down for a chat. When we invited Gyasi, he was totally up for it, and we ended up talking stage outfits, glam rock lipstick, and musical inspirations—over some incredibly decadent glam rock macarons, of course.

Once the lovely chat was over, it was time for the main event.

For those not knowing, the iBoat is an underground (literally) concert venue tucked away in the belly of a boat in Bordeaux. It’s a hidden treasure with a raw, intimate vibe—perfect for an artist like Gyasi. We’d caught Black Milk here a few years back, along with the unstoppable Daru Jones, who also drums for Jack White.

The Opening Act: Hot Flowers

Before Gyasi hit the stage, we discovered a local act—Hot Flowers, a duo of garage rock veterans who’ve been rocking together for nearly three decades. And let us tell you, these fifty-something rockers haven’t lost an ounce of their edge.

One guy was tearing up the guitar and vocals, screaming lyrics like his life depended on it, while the drummer smashed away with such power that it felt like the boat might crack open. The energy was insane, and the crowd loved every second of it.

If you haven’t heard their latest album Camera, go check it out ASAP.

Gyasi: Fiery, Flamboyant, and oh so Rock’n’Roll

Now, back to the main act.

Gyasi had described his sound as “Fiery, Flamboyant, and Rock’n’Roll” during our interview, and let’s just say—he wasn’t kidding. As soon as he stepped on stage, wearing a glittering red outfit and his signature platform shoes, the crowd was instantly captivated. You just couldn’t take your eyes off him!

As he kicked off his first song, Gyasi quickly moved toward the buzzing crowd. He was backed by an outstanding band—bassist, drummer, and guitarist—who were all in top form and gave it their all.

Gyasi isn’t shy about his influences. Wearing a Raw Power t-shirt during the interview, he soon ended up shirtless, channeling the wild spirit of Iggy Pop.

His movements had the grace of Bowie and the cheekiness of Marc Bolan, and it absolutely worked. But we’re also hoping Gyasi will step out from those giant shadows and show us more of his personality because there’s a lot of brilliance brewing beneath those glittering layers.

The Setlist: High-Octane from Start to Finish

The high-energy tracks followed one after another at breakneck speed, and the crowd soon found themselves chanting along to the catchy choruses like Tongue Tied, Kiss Kiss, Godhead, and All Messed Up.

We particularly enjoyed the delightful Baby Blue, the haunting Teacher, and the fabulous guitar solos and peacock screams on Fast Love.

The fiery show ended, and enchanted fans flocked to greet the artists, who came down to sign autographs by the merch table. We congratulated Gyasi and his band, dazzled, and left with two cool t-shirts, including one asking, “How the f*** do you pronounce Gyasi?”

If this artist performs anywhere near you and you’re nostalgic for the golden age of glam rock, don’t hesitate—you’re in for a wild night. Glam rock is back, baby, and Gyasi is leading the charge!
