Heavy metal fan friends, it’s time for tears: the great Ozzy Osbourne & his band Black Sabbath have taken their final bow! For this very special occasion, this legendary artist gathered all his musician friends for an unforgettable show that moved us to tears. We had to celebrate these legends with a brand-new cake.
There are few musicians as wild as Ozzy Osbourne, the grandpa of heavy metal, who founded a legendary band: Black Sabbath. This group revolutionized the music world, and heavy metal owes them a great deal. While we had already celebrated Ozzy with a munchable bat (made of chocolate, don’t worry!), we had never made a cake for this epic band, and it was high time we caught up.
Why is Black Sabbath a band that matters?
More than fifty years ago, a young Ozzy Osbourne stuck a note on a Birmingham music shop wall that said, “Singer looking for band—have PA, will scream.” That bold move attracted guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward, who must’ve thought, « This guy sounds interesting… or possibly demented. » Together with bassist Geezer Butler, they formed a band that would go on to invent heavy metal and scare parents worldwide: Black Sabbath.
Their early music was heavy, dark, and loud enough to wake the dead or at least to annoy the neighbors. Albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality became the blueprint for an entire genre. And you must have heard at least once the songs “War Pigs”, « Iron Man », « Sweet Leaf » or “Paranoid ».
Back in the day, the band lived like true rock stars: drugs, booze, and behavior that made hotel managers weep. Stories from those years could fill volumes. Eventually, the band mellowed out… a little. Time has a way of turning wild rock gods into slightly more chill rock uncles. But they’ve never lost their edge.
Ozzy himself became a full-blown icon, not just for his music and over-the-top personality but also, for letting us peek into his family’s gloriously chaotic life on MTV’s The Osbournes. Way to go, Prince of Darkness!
In short, it was about time we immortalized these amazing folks!
Creating a Heavy Metal cake for the Sabbath
As you know, around here we’ve got a sweet tooth and constantly buzzing brains. Seeing the Masters of Reality flash by on our Instagram vinyl feed, we instantly wanted to make a cake with the iconic purple lettering from the album. Since black and purple are the two most difficult colors to achieve in cake form, we knew we’d be tearing our hair out, but we didn’t back down. That’s how motivated we were!
The first try was a periwinkle purple of the worst taste, the second a lovely burgundy completely off theme. The third try was the charm, and we finally managed to recreate the iconic purple essential to the cake’s recipe! Phew!
Purple naturally calls for ingredients in the same color family, so we chose a delicious blueberry compote scented with tonka bean. Since we love the combo of chocolate and fruit, we paired this wonder with a luscious dark chocolate mousse and poured it all into our pretty sponge cake.
Then came the details: we recreated the logo and made sponge cake bats (because a Black Sabbath cake without bats is like salt without pepper — right?). We added spiral-decorated shortbread cookies to evoke the infamous Masters of Reality record. And we whipped up a lovely Russian vanilla-tonka buttercream to finish it all off.
